Ode to Gumby
Here's to my '98 Suburban, Gumby, tough as nails,
A beast who hit 190,000 miles, with epic tales.
For twenty-eight long years, you've been my family's ride,
A full-size throwback warrior, rolling with pride.Up and down I-81, from NoVA to Blacksburg you'd glide,
A V8 roaring beast, with tailgate dreams inside.
Football weekends in the 2000s, at VT and UVA,
Gumby hosted parties grand, a king of parking lots, hurrah! One day Mike, with curveball wild, smashed your rear glass pane,
But grudge-free Gumby shrugged it off, no spite in your domain.
Through high school, then to college, you trailed him all four years,
A frat-boy hauler, tough as hell, amid the kegs and cheers. One rush-hour wreck, my Mercedes met its doom,
Smashed into your trailer hitch, a multi-car kaboom!
The Benz was totaled, others too, but Gumby, not a scratch,
You laughed at fate, you stubborn mule, a titan in the match.Drydocked oft, through pandemics grim, you'd sit for months on end,
But with a jump, you'd roar to life, my ever-faithful friend.
Gas you guzzled, wallets wept, a thirst from days of yore,
In a world of EVs and Cybertrucks, you're a relic I adore. At Delaware's DMV, your checkup came one day,
"Gumby's mileage?" asked the man; "190K!" I'd say.
He grinned and toasted, "Here's to more!"-another grand encore,
But then your head gasket blew, and shook me to the core.A steamy, smoky curtain call, your keys no longer mine,
Sold to a guy named Rob, my heart still hears that glorious V8 whine.
Farewell, dear Gumby, rugged friend, a relic from days of yore,
May your new owner treat you well, as I recall your engine's roar.
